My family travels to the Outer Banks in North Carolina each year. I have come here every single summer of my life so far. I love the time I spend here because I can basically just relax with extended family and make art at my leisure. It's very dreamy.
This year has been incredibly beautiful. We got to see amazing dark storm clouds roll through and saw some spectacular heat lightning! Have you ever seen it? Behold:
When I travel here I pack my art basket with some supplies for art journaling. I don't let myself overdo it because if I bring too much I won't use it all. I bring mostly my gouache tubes which I store in a tin, and jars of water soluble colored pencils and graphite, & several paint brushes. Oh yes, and glue.
This time I brought a surplus of journals to work into because at the last minute I couldn't decide which ones I wanted to use. Then once I got here I ended up buying a cute old book at a thrift store and I got inspired to use that as a journal on this trip. I have a loose goal to fill that book up with art in my time here, but I actually doubt that will happen. It's whatever.
I usually work into my art journals on the deck, facing the ocean. My grandma reads all day on the porch swing to the left of me, and my dad usually reads on the hammock to my right. Honestly, I'm really only down there painting for 30 minutes spurts of time. Occasionally I might get really into what I'm doing and be there for an hour or two, but usually I am ready for a break after a short time. It's great because the wind dries my layers of wet paint as I go do out to the ocean or eat food. Thanks, wind.
I went on a beach walk with my mom and we sat down in the sand and talked. I drew the following pages then. And I think for once in my life I will leave this page just as it is, a simple drawing.
I love hearing about how people work art making into vacation or travel (or how they don't!) Do you guys make art while traveling? What are your tips?
